Liberating our Bodies: Black Feminist Visions of Polyamorous Practice
Alexandria cunningham & Jordan victorian
What do liberated sexuality and relationships look like? What role can non-monogamy play in building more liberated social relations? This workshop explores the revolutionary potential of non-monogamy through black feminist perspectives on sexuality, gender, and freedom. The ways we practice sex and relationships are shaped by racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression. But embodied sexual practice—sexuality in tune with our own needs—allows us to imagine and create alternative relationships that truly sustain us. Polyamory calls for us to be honest and vulnerable. It pushes us to embrace responsibility by building supportive relationships and communities. Sex is also a space where we learn about our bodies, needs, and desires for ourselves. Some visions of polyamory embrace romance but stigmatize sexually-focused connections. Yet polyamorists have a lot to learn from the kinky and freaky people among us. So this workshop examines how non-monogamous love and sexuality can both play a part in liberating our bodies and relationships.
